Consultation has concluded
As part of the Oceans Protection Plan, the Government of Canada is developing a new, more collaborative approach to managing marine traffic issues in local waterways.
Proactive Vessel Management is a new concept that is being explored. It involves collaboration between:
the Government of Canada;
Indigenous peoples and coastal communities;
Provincial, territorial and municipal governments;
Canada’s marine shipping industry;
Pilotage authorities;
Marine associations;
Port authorities; and
Non-governmental organizations.
Through Proactive Vessel Management, discussion forums will be established to develop measures that promote safe navigation and environmental protection in local waterways. A national framework will provide guidance and direction for how Proactive Vessel Management will be delivered across Canada.
We want to hear from you!
As a waterway user or resident of a coastal community, what vessel traffic issues and/or conflicts do you face?
What elements should be considered when developing a national framework for Proactive Vessel Management?
This input will help ensure the system meets the needs of those living and working on our waterways and coasts and takes into account local knowledge and experience, including from Indigenous peoples and coastal communities.
Some examples of the types of solutions that Proactive Vessel Management could include are:
building education and awareness of the maritime environment with waterway users
improving communications on the water
applying more vessel controls (such as speed limits and/or alternate routes)
