With millions of people on Canadian roads every day, road safety is a key priority for Transport Canada.
We do compliance testing and research (including crash testing) at our Motor Vehicle Test Centre in Blainville, Quebec, as a way of supporting the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. We also investigate real world crashes and examine vehicle, environmental, and human factors in motor vehicle collisions.
We're quick to investigate and work with manufacturers on recalls when defects are found.
We update regulations to keep up with road safety priorities — for example, requiring seat belts on new medium and large highway buses as of September 2020. We also look for ways to protect vulnerable road users, like pedestrians and cyclists.
Transport Canada is closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and has issued guidance for the road sector to keep Canadians safe during the pandemic.
As we review laws and consider new approaches, we want to know what you think. You can find and participate in the consultations listed in the right hand menu bar.
