Consultation has concluded

The Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) is a way to manage emissions from the global aviation industry. It’s one way that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) member countries are working towards carbon neutral growth for international aviation from 2020 onwards.

ICAO expects that the scheme will support other ways of reducing carbon dioxide emissions from aviation, like:

  • newer aircraft technology
  • operational improvements
  • wider use of sustainable aviation fuels

Transport Canada began developing CORSIA regulations in the fall of 2017. We based these regulations on the draft final requirements from ICAO. Regulations for monitoring, reporting and verification came into effect on January 1, 2019.

The proposed regulations cover the offsetting part of CORSIA, and the updated monitoring, reporting and verification requirements. We published the proposed regulations in Canada Gazette, Part I on August 29, 2020.

We want to hear your thoughts on how Canada plans to implement CORSIA. To participate, please:

  1. Read the discussion paper to learn more about this consultation.
  2. Contact us at tc.corsia.tc@tc.gc.ca to send us a submission. The consultation is open until October 19, 2020.
